Dolly releases 42nd solo album, ‘Blue Smoke’

Dolly released her 42nd album “Blue Smoke” in North America on, May 13, 2014. “Blue Smoke” was the fifth album recorded on her label, Dolly Records (in collaboration with Sony Masterworks).

Dolly grew up in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and the famous fog that gives the mountains their name inspired the album title and the Smokies themselves inspired much of the album content. As she has said,

“It was a song that brought me out of the Smoky Mountains and it will be a song that lays me back down in the ground in the Smoky Mountains.”

Dolly has said that this record would be a celebration of “all the colors” in her life by featuring the bluegrass, country, gospel, and mountain music influences she says the fans have allowed her to “dabble in through the years.”

“Blue Smoke” includes a duet with long-time collaborator Kenny Rogers (“You Can’t Make Old Friends“), a gospel version of a Bon Jovi classic (“Lay Your Hands on Me”), and a version of a Bob Dylan song (“Don’t Think Twice”). The album also features Dolly’s duet with Willie Nelson, “From Here to the Moon and Back.” Dolly released two singles from the album, “Try” and “Home.” She delighted fans with a music video for “Home.”

Dolly began her “Blue Smoke” World Tour in early 2014 and made appearances on AXS TV (Dan Rather), and Access Hollywood to promote the album and tour. She also performed tracks from the album on QVC on, April 27, 2014.

“Blue Smoke” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Charts and No. 6 on the Billboard Pop Charts making it Dolly’s highest debuting solo album to date.

‘Just Between You And Me,’ the much-anticipated box set containing the beloved recordings of Dolly and Porter Wagoner was released in 2014 with 13 previously unreleased tracks

Tuesday, May 13, 2014, marked the release of the six-disc box set of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton songs entitled – “Just Between You and Me: The Complete Recordings 1967 – 1976.” The set was released on Bear Family Records who specialize in retro collections. Dolly and Porter released 13 albums together (every song is included in the box set), had 21 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts, and had 139 duets during that period – they also released a single during the 2000’s (a re-recording of the Gospel standard “Drifting too Far From the Shore).

Despite the massive output, the pair had an often fiery relationship as Dolly mentioned in 2012 (Dolly has attributed the development of some of her Doralee character from “9 to 5” to her time with Wagoner),

“He was in charge, and it was his show, but he was also very strong willed. That’s why we fought like crazy, because I wouldn’t put up with a bunch of stuff. Out of respect for him, I knew he was the boss, and I would go along to where I felt this was reasonable for me. But once it passed points where it was like, your way or my way, to prove to you that I can do it, then I would just pitch a damn fit. I wouldn’t care if it killed me.”

Despite the years of drama, the pair made up around 1988 and remained friends until Porter Wagoner’s death in 2007.

Dolly re-records ‘From Here to the Moon and Back’ as duet with Willie Nelson, marking their third duet together

A newly recorded version of Dolly’s song “From Here to the Moon and Back” featuring Willie Nelson as her duet partner appears on Willie’s 2014 album of duets.

The duet originally appeared on the soundtrack for “Joyful Noise,” a movie starring Dolly as a choir member opposite her choir director portrayed by Queen Latifah, with whom Dolly’s character butted heads as the group tried to win a national choral competition.

Willie said in an interview,

“Dolly’s song is a great song, ‘From Here to the Moon and Back,’ it’s one of my favorites.”

Dolly and Willie had a Top 10 duet with the song “Everything’s Beautiful (In It’s Own Way)” in 1982 and also paired up for 1983’s “I Really Don’t Want to Know.” Willie appeared with Dolly in the 1989 television special “Kenny, Dolly, & Willie.”

Dolly’s 2009 live DVD/CD recording featuring special backstage footage and concert soundtracks

On her 2008 “Backwoods Barbie” tour, Dolly recorded a PBS special entitled “Dolly: Live in London O2 Arena” which was released in 2009 as a combination CD/DVD called “Dolly: Live From London.”

Live from London – Available on iTunes

Dolly came to the idea of a DVD after reviewing the footage from her performance in London.

“We thought it was about time. We were really inspired after we did our European tour last year. In London, we worked at the O2 Arena, and the audience was just so great, and the place was just so wonderful, and we had such good footage when we got home, we thought this was just too good to put in the archives and hold for another time. We edited it down, and we thought it would be a great idea, to put the CD and the DVD in one package.”

The DVD includes 50 minutes of special material like behind-the-scenes footage and concert sound-checks.
