Dolly releases second holiday-themed album, ‘Home for Christmas’ along with a holiday movie on ABC of the same name

On Dec. 22, 1990, Dolly released her second holiday-themed album (and first full Christmas album), “Home for Christmas,” on the Columbia Nashville/Tristar label. The album’s release was timed to coincide with an ABC holiday television special of the same name.

Home for Christmas” reached number 74 on the Billboard Top Album chart and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Dolly wanted to bring a new twist to these classic songs,

“We used a lot of Appalachian instruments like the Dulcimer… and that gives a lot of the traditional songs a sweet and different feeling from what people are used to hearing.”

The album features traditional Christmas classics and included collaborations with the Salem Methodist Church congregation and choir, the Christ Church Pentecostal Choir, the Bobby Jones Gospel Choir, and Dolly’s own children’s choir, Our Kids.

Dolly films ‘Home for Christmas,’ a holiday special in her hometown with family and friends

In 1990, ABC aired Dolly’s holiday special “Home For Christmas,” occasionally referred to as “Dolly Parton: Christmas at Home.” The movie accompanied the release of Dolly’s Christmas album of the same name and features Dolly singing Christmas classics. In the movie, Dolly returns to Sevierville, TN, and visits many people and places she loves.

“I used my mom and dad, my brothers and sisters, my aunts and uncles, and my nieces and nephews. We have things like cookie baking, and a hayride, and we just have some wonderful times that I really think people are going to enjoy.”

Dolly takes viewers to her family home, her church, a home for the elderly and Dollywood.
